Reading at Hartshill Academy

Reading is very important to everyone at Hartshill School as it builds a strong foundation to support all areas of our ambitious curriculum.

At Hartshill School we have three main strategies to support pupils to develop and extend their reading and reading comprehension.

1. OWL Reading Scheme in the school library

All pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 have one lesson in the school library every fortnight. In library lessons pupils access the Hartshill OWL reading scheme. All books in our school library are colour coded. Pupils are supported by our school librarian to know the level they are currently reading at and challenged to access books at the level above. Progress on the OWL scheme is monitored by your child’s English teacher and our librarian Mrs Emma Kerslake.

2. Reading Plus

Reading Plus is an adaptive literacy solution that improves fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, stamina, and motivation. All pupils have a reading plus login. Pupils in Years 7-9 are expected to complete 30 minutes on their reading plus account every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Please click on the link below to log in:

3. Form Time Reading

All pupils in Years 7-10 complete 30 minutes of form time reading every day. During this time the whole form read a book together. Research shows this group reading led by their teacher supports pupils to access reading at a high level. The teacher can also then support pupils to develop their comprehension of the text too.
